The "mold" they're talking about here was being used as a form of biological warfare that one of the Shadowfolk was using to subjugate most of Geist. We'll see him in a bit, but it's because of the toxins that both the characters besides Synn in this strip have tear-filled, irritated looking eyes. As Silver notes, when they breathe it, they can't make those lightning ball things (for some unfathomable reason.)
The mold in question is similar to those found on Earth that are used to culture cheese. In my head, both Earth humans and Caligulans, as well as most other human races within LOP, are pretty much immune to its effects (Of course, we can't throw lightning balls, either... XD)

What's funny is that the idea that the mold smells like or has anything in common with cheese mold sounds like a joke and... it SORT of started as one?
Except that I've had an allergy to milk my entire life so the "joke" was kind of more rooted in "Ha ha ha isn't this a ridiculous weakness to have ha ha sob"
And no, before anyone asks, I can't just have Lactaid. Lactose intolerance is not an allergy and the fact that people call it that (including some doctors) is terrible because it causes confusion over what can be very serious medical conditions.
